Frequently Asked Questions
What variety of plants can be cultivated in the Stack & Sprout?
The Stack & Sprout is versatile, accommodating a vast selection of herbs, vegetables, and fruits. While the thrill of experimenting with new plants adds to its allure, we've already had success with the following:
- Herbs: Cilantro, Basil, chamomile, chives, dill, lavender, lemon grass, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, thyme (including common, lemon, caraway, wooly, elfin, silver, orange, lavender, broadleaf, among others) and more.
- Vegetables: Arugula, beans (such as snap beans, green/string beans, lima beans, bush beans, fava beans, blay-eyed peas, among others), bok choy, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumbers, dandelion, eggplant, kale, all varieties of lettuce, okra, bell peppers, hot peppers, chili peppers, squashes, rhubarb, spinach, sprouts, and more.
- Fruits: Strawberries, tomatoes, tomatillos, etc.
- Others: Flowers and leafy greens.
Can I grow large plants?
Due to our efficient watering system, plants tend to grow larger and healthier. For taller plants, we are introducing a Support Ring to provide additional stability.
How fast will my plants grow?
Thanks to the Stack & Sprout’s smart growing system, most herbs and leafy greens will start to sprout in their first 1-2 weeks, and depending what you're growing, you can expect to be ready to harvest within 6-12 weeks. Fruits and larger vegetables may take a bit longer, but the results are always fresh, organic, and worth the wait.
To support faster growth, we recommend getting HydraGrow's A/B Nutrients and putting up to 2 cap fulls of each every time you refill a fresh tank of water on your stack and sprout.
How do I maximize growth of healthy plants?
To help your plants thrive, keep the water tank topped up, use high-quality seeds, and ensure your system gets plenty of natural or artificial light.
The smart soil capsules are made with nutrients, so your plants stay lush and vibrant with minimal effort on your part.
However we do recommend the following to ensure healthy plant growth:
Every time you re-fill a fresh tank of water on your Stack & Sprout, add to the water tank the following
- 2 cap fulls of both the A & B HydraGrow's A/B Nutrients.
- 30ml of a 3% FOOD-GRADE Hydrogen Peroxide to avoid algae growth in your unit

How do I setup the Stack & Sprout unit?
Stack & Sprout is easy to assemble. The modules stack securely on top of each other without the need for rods or wing nuts. This makes assembly quick and allows for adjustments when needed.
To setup your new Stack & Sprout, please follow the printed instructions in the box or download a digital copy here.
How tall are the Stack & Sprout starter units with 2 modules, and what is the height of each add-on module?
The starter package, which includes two modules, stands at approximately 30 inches in height and occupies a 1x1 square foot area. Each additional module measures slightly under 9 inches in height.
How do I access the water tank?
You can easily reach the water tank by removing the top lid of the Stack & Sprout, or by removing one of the lower plant pods to test pH, add nutrients, and make adjustments. There’s also a drain valve at the bottom for easy water changes if you need to replace a larger amount.
How much water does the tank hold?
The water tank holds up to 5 Litres (1.32 gallons), providing consistent hydration for your plants. This means less work for you and happier, healthier plants that thrive with minimal effort.
It's Important that you refill the water tank when the unit Is OFF. If you re-fill the tank to full while the unit Is on, when It turns off the water that was cycling through the system will settle In the tank which will overfill It and cause the unit to leak.
How does the self-watering pump work?
- Stack & Sprout features a built-in water basin at the bottom with an automatic pump and timer. Once plugged in, the system waters your plants for you. The pump sends water to the top stack, which then trickles down to each pod like rain, ensuring even hydration. The pump is specifically designed for the unit, so there is no need to change the setting, flow rate, or any other configuration.
- If the tubing is coming loose, you can secure it using a zip tie or a hose clamp, which can be purchased at a local hardware store. This will ensure a tight fit and prevent it from slipping off. You can also add a clamp where the tubing connects to the pump for extra security.
- The water pump has an automatic timer that runs on and off in 20-minute intervals. This cannot be changed. The pump operates at 260L/hour maximum flow rate, with a 320cm lift height, 4.1W power consumption, and runs on DC 12V.
How do I plant seeds in the Stack & Sprout system and care for them?
When planting seeds in the Stack & Sprout system, follow these steps:
- While we'll provide guidance on recommended seeds and quantities, seed packs typically have specific instructions. For most plants, you'll need between 1 to 3 seeds.
- After placing the seeds, cover them with the Stack & Sprout greenhouse cap. This helps in seed germination. Once the sprouting plant touches the cap's interior, it's time to remove it and allow the plant to grow freely.
- Enhancing the water with nutrients can promote better growth, see our FAQ on "How do I maximize growth of healthy plants." Ensure you follow specific instructions provided with your nutrient solution to avoid over-concentration. If you see your plants wilting, it might mean that you’ve added too much nutrient solution. Simply empty the water using the valve at the bottom of the base, and then add fresh water. This will help to refresh the water concentration.
- If you notice your plants starting to wilt, use the water release valve located at the bottom. Let out about 3/4 of the water, then refill your Stack & Sprout with fresh water. This can help rejuvenate your plants and ensure they get the nutrients they need.
Do you need to exclusively use the smart soil capsules?
While technically feasible to use any growing material that fits inside the pods, we do not recommend traditional garden soil due to its potential for messiness or pump clogs. It's important to note that Stack & Sprout's smart soil capsules are specifically engineered to optimize the growth of herbs and vegetables. For the best results, and to not damage or clog your water pumps, we highly recommend only using them.
Is everything you need to get started included in the starter unit, or are additional purchases required?
- Each Stack & Sprout starter unit comes fully equipped with everything you need, except seeds (due to shipping regulations).
- In the starter unit, you'll receive the following items: 1x Base, 2x Middle Stack Modules, 1x Lid, 1x AC/DC Charger, 8x Plant Pods, 8x Smart Soil Capsules, and 1x Water Pump .
- If you wish to Increase the height or capacity of your starter unit you can purchase additional middle stack modules.
- If you wish to grow large plants that require support, you can purchase the support ring accessory.
Does the spinning motion of the tower have any negative effects on the plant roots?
No, the spinning motion doesn't negatively impact the roots. The tower is designed to swivel smoothly at the base, ensuring no disturbance to either the roots or the integrated pump and plug. This feature is part of our innovative design.
Can Stack & Sprout be utilized indoors during the winter season?
While Stack & Sprout is primarily designed for outdoor gardening, it is possible to cultivate your garden indoors using our unit. In such cases, it's essential to install indoor UV plant lights above or around the Stack & Sprout to ensure your garden thrives and remains healthy throughout the winter.
